The Position

The Digital Biomarker data analysis team of D&A is looking for an intern in the area of ML/AI. The team is at the forefront of the digital health space, with regular deployments of digital health solutions in clinical studies of neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s Disease(PD). Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive nervous system disorder that predominantly affects movement. Major symptoms include tremor, stiffness or slowing of movement (bradykinesia). The PD Monitoring application is a digital health technology (DHT) that is being developed by Roche to detect the disease progression in Parkinson’s Disease (PD) by measuring changes in cognition and motor function on a frequent basis. The PD Monitoring application prompts patients to do motor and cognitive tests on the provided smartphone device and collects passive monitoring data (PM) throughout the day. In our main study we have over 300 people with PD (PwPD), over 100 of which are part of the placebo arm. All PwPD in the study have been asked to contribute daily PM data for over 3 years, some - over 5 years. PM data is continuous and spans over 8 hours per day on average. Using PM data, the intern will develop an interpretable DNN model that predicts patients performance in bradykinesia tests, and use the embeddings of that model to characterize and track bradykinesia in activities of daily life.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Want to apply their ML/AI skills to complex real-life data

  • Are motivated by contributing to measurement solutions that help bring new therapies to patients

  • Are creative problem solvers, quick learners, and have demonstrated high productivity

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build and interpret machine learning algorithms to predict bradykinesia and its aspects from the raw IMU ( accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer) data or derived features.

  • Collaborate with the host team and other stakeholders to evaluate results and discuss next steps

  • Proactively share learnings and knowledge with both the project team and the wider Roche Advanced Analytics community

  • Advance machine learning and artificial intelligence within Roche

Experience and Competencies Preferred:

  • Knowledge of a wide range of machine learning techniques and applications, especially Deep Learning, e.g., Multi-Output Regression with Generative Adversarial Networks [1]

  • Experience applying machine learning algorithms and techniques to real-life data, preferably to healthcare data

  • Very good programming skills with Python, including visualization of complex datasets and scientific results

  • Experience implementing reproducible research practices like version control (e.g. using Git) and virtual environments

  • Demonstrated contributions to open source packages, libraries or functions are a big plus

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Experience with HPC cluster and/or cloud computing

Qualifications Required:

  • MSc/PhD degree candidate in Data Science related field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Health Economics, Outcomes Research, Computer Science). MSc students within 12 months after graduation can also be considered.

  • Proficiency in English

Due to regulations Non-EU/EFTA citizens must provide a certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory as part of the application documents. Furthermore, they need to be enrolled during the entire duration of the internship.
